A Top Day in Jeffrey's Bay

There's a remarkable freedom that comes from visiting Jeffrey's Bay as a non-surfer. A combination of growing up inland with poor balance, swimming ineptitude and a morbid fear of sharks (even in the pool) meant I never grew up gnarled by this addictive sport. This all means I needn't worry about getting the best board or the coolest board shorts - not that I'd have any trouble finding either in a small town stocked with such an astonishing choice of items. It means I can stay on dry land and watch as the local dolphins emulate and surpass the wave-riding skills of their humanoid brethren; it's a breathtaking sight. It also means that, without getting my feet wet, I can take part in the tall tales of barrelling breaks and right-handers that slap you in the face, all the while enjoying another breezy twilight from the comfort of one of the plethora of beachfront bars. Without worrying about what the wind is doing, I can hit the dunes and sandboard, knowing that the sand isn't going to dunk me. I can also indulge in some terrific bird-watching - and I'm talking winged species here, not the dozens of Roxy girls who seem to double as traffic cops (in as far as they stop traffic, see?). There is more, so much more to this world-famous surf mecca than just riding the rollers. But if any town ever made me want to give up such liberties and take to the drink, it's laidback, loose-tongued, salt-washed J-Bay. Maybe next time.
