If you're based in the capital, Honiara, live in budget accommodation with self-catering facilities, and avoid expensive tinned imported food, you can get by on US$25.00 a day. In villages, you might even get free accommodation if you don't mind simple leaf houses, although the offer of food or money wouldn't hurt. If you stay in higher-priced accommodation you probably won't have access to a kitchen, so food prices rise as well. Expect to pay between US$12.00 and US$22.00 a day for prepared meals. Diving and tours boost costs considerably.
If you're out of the main centres, money is only available from branches of the NBSI. There are about 50 local agencies in the provinces, usually located in shops or post offices. If you're staying a while, you might like to open an account. In urban areas, travellers cheques are easily changed, and cash advances are available on credit cards from ANZ and Westpac branches, but not NBSI).
As with much of Melanesia and Polynesia, tipping is not on the agenda. Tipping imposes an obligation that the receiver must return, so a smile and a 'thank you' are sufficient recompense for services rendered. Bargaining, too, should be avoided; however it's becoming more common now to ask for a 'second price' on handicrafts. Inflated prices in rural areas are usually due to isolation: people just don't know what the going price is for services. Sometimes food will be accepted as payment.
