A Top Day in Bratislava

Yawn and stretch. After waking up in the quiet of Koliba Hill at Penzión Zlatá Noha, I'll catch the bus down past the vineyards into the Old Town for breakfast. Why not spoil myself? A presso s mliekom (espresso with milk) and a big bowl of bananas and chocolate at the Čokoládovňa (Chocolate Café) on Michalská should do the trick.

Afterwards I'll climb up to the grounds of Bratislava Castle to watch the river go by. The orange and slate roofs of the old town are such a striking contrast to the UFO-like New Bridge and concrete housing blocks across the Danube. Back in the centre there might be a new exhibition at the tiny modernist Museum of Milan Dobes (Zámocnička 13) to check out, or maybe I'll just wander around window-shopping till I'm ready to recharge at a sidewalk cafe.

Later on, I'll head up to the city forest at the top of Koliba Hill, passing my penzión on the way. Walking in nature may be the Slovak way, but I'll probably tramp down and catch the chairlift back.

Then it'll be time for dinner in the park: most likely, I'll eat at the rustic Koliba Expo, with its tasty bryndzové halušky (gnocchi-like dumplings and sheep's cheese) topped with chunks of juicy grilled lamb. That is unless the Old Time Band is playing at Café Štúdio Club (cnr Laurinská & Radničná), in which case I'd have to get back to town pronto!
