St-Louis' climate, like the rest of the country, can be broadly divided into wet and dry, with the dry season last from November to May and the wet building up from June and peaking in August as rains build up from the southern equatorial waters. Late winter, though warm and dry, is marked by the appearance of the annual harmattan winds from the north, which carry many thousands of tons of Saharan dust, lending the light a rusty quality inimical to photography enthusiasts.
Winters in St-Louis are moderately milder than those of Dakar to the south, and the stiff breezes that whip off the Atlantic, particularly in the afternoon, also help curb the sun's enthusiasm.
