Compared to other African capitals, Dakar is an expensive place; the rates of top-end hotels rival those of Western cities. Good budget places are very rare indeed in the capital, and most mid-range options overpriced. In the city, budget travellers might just about get by on US$25.00 a day, though that means battered bush taxis, street food and probably sleeping in a place that doubles part-time as a brothel. Mid-rangers should allow for at least US$50.00 to be comfortable. Upwards, there are few limits. If you want to sleep, dine and travel in true style, allow for about US$150.00 to US$200.00 a day. Outside the capital, prices are significantly lower, even in the most touristed sites, with US$15.00 to US$20.00 being the most basic budget option.

All but the most remote areas have banks with ATMs, Visa being the preferred option. For cash, euros and dollars are the most easily changed currency. Cash is fairly easily changed, travellers cheques far less so. Learn some bargaining skills - you'll need them, whether shopping in the markets or negotiating a taxi.
