Stirling is roughly equidistant between airports at Glasgow (58km/36mi) and Edinburgh (53km/33mi). Scottish Citylink runs frequent buses to and from Glasgow (45min). Some buses continue to Aberdeen (3.5hr) via Perth and Dundee; others go to Inverness. For buses to Inverness (3.5hr) you'll usually have to change at Perth. A daily service from Edinburgh to Fort William goes via Stirling (with connections to Oban or Skye). All buses go from the bus station on Goosecroft Rd. First runs local buses (to Callander, Aberfoyle etc) and operates an express service to Edinburgh (1hr). First ScotRail runs frequent services to and from Edinburgh (55min) and Glasgow (40min), and there are regular services to Perth (35min), Dundee (55min) and Aberdeen (2.25hr).
Walking is the best way to get around the narrow cobbled streets of the old town, though there are some steep slopes to tackle. A hop-on hop-off city bus does a circuit of the main sights, including Stirling Castle, Bannockburn and Wallace Monument. You can hire an economical car from Arnold Clark (www.arnoldclark.com; Kerse Rd).
