The Highlands are a mixed-bag weather wise. Wet cold months with powerful arctic winds contrast an average 1000 hours of sunshine per year and no negative average temperatures from month to month. The western highlands, which look out toward the Atlantic, receive on average over 3000mm (118in) of rain per year, with summer highs of 19°C (66°F), while the eastern highlands have drier, milder winters and cool summers. The sun barely rises in the winter and barely sets in the summer.
