Inverness airport (16km/10mi east of the city, take A96) is served by most domestic airlines. Transfer buses run to the city. To reach Inverness by car from the south take A9, and from Aberdeen take A96. Take A82 to reach Inverness from the southwest. The centrally located Inverness railway station runs direct services to Edinburgh, Glasgow, London (including sleeper trains) and Aberdeen.
The Loch Ness Express ferry runs from Dochgarroch (3km/1.8mi south of Inverness; free shuttle bus from city centre) along the length of Loch Ness to Fort Augustus (May-Oct twice daily, Nov-Dec once daily). The Caledonian Canal boat service links Beauly Firth, 16km (10mi) west of Inverness, through Loch Ness to Britain's highest mountain, Ben Nevis. Around 50 bus routes operate within Inverness, but these can be difficult to navigate for the outsider. Ask the driver. Taxis are best for getting around at night and fares should be cheap, given Inverness' compact layout.
