If you can tear yourself away from the raucous side of Glaswegian living, there are numerous green spaces within the city ripe for walking and cycling. Pollok Country Park has many woodland trails, while Kelvin Walkway follows the River Kelvin. There are also several long-distance walking trails and cycling routes that originate in Glasgow and head out to more rural parts of Scotland.
There are heaps of cycle routes that originate or end in Glasgow. To name but a few, there's the Glasgow-Loch Lomond route which traverses residential and industrial areas; the Glasgow-Edinburgh Cycle Way partly follows the Clyde Walkway and a former railway line and the Glasgow-Greenock/Gourock route runs via Paisley. To hire a mountain bike drop into West End Cycles (tel: 357 1344, 0800 072 8015; 16 Chancellor St) at the southern end of Byres Rd.
It's possible to walk 9mi (14.5km) of the Clyde through Glasgow. An outstanding section lies between the Victoria Bridge and the SECC, taking in 150 years of bridge engineering and a chunk of Glasgow's shipbuilding heritage.
Two football clubs dominate sport in Glasgow, having vastly more resources than other Scottish clubs and a long history (and rivalry). This rivalry is also along partisan lines, with Rangers (the 'Gers') representing Protestant supporters, and Celtic (the 'Bhoys'), of course, Catholic. Celtic FC (tel: 551 8653; www.celticfc.co.uk; Celtic Park, Parkhead) has a 60,832-seat stadium and Rangers FC (tel: 0870 600 1972; www.rangers.co.uk; Ibrox Stadium, 150 Edmiston Dr) has tours of the stadium and trophy room. Rangers' stadium holds 50,500.
Football can be a touchy subject in Glasgow. Tell anyone who asks that you're a 'Jags' (Partick Thistle) supporter and you're on neutral ground. Billy Connolly, who grew up in Partick, claims that he always thought the full team name was 'Partick Thistle Nil'.
