Republic of Congo: Overview

The smaller, friendlier and marginally more peaceful of the Congos.

With one of the world's largest chimpanzee populations and the mighty Congo River ebbing on its southern border, Congo (Brazzaville) has plenty to trigger the imagination. But recent violence has strangled the country's nascent tourist industry and reduced visitors to a trickle.

Travel Warning: Unpredictable Security Situation

The political situation is slowly improving in the Republic of Congo, but most of the country continues to experience uncertainty, with sporadic violence a regular occurrence.

Consular advice suggests central Brazzaville and Pointe Noire are considered relatively secure, but recommends that travel between the capital and the coastal town should be by air as road and rail links are not safe. Travel to the border areas in northern Congo along the Ubangui River should be avoided, due to insecurity in the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo.
