Getting There

The Huaraz airport (tel: 44 3095) at Anta, 23km (14mi) north of town, takes only chartered flights.

Minibuses for Caraz (1.5hr) leave every few minutes during the day from near the petrol station (13 de Diciembre); this will drop you in any of the towns along the way. Minibuses going south along El Callejón de Huaylas to Recuay, Catac and other villages, leave from the Transportes Zona Sur terminal (cnr A Gridilla and 27 de Novembre). Many companies service Lima (7-8hr), so shop around. Three bus routes reach Chimbote on the north coast. For services across the Andes to the towns east of Huaraz, there are many small companies with brave, beat-up buses. Movil Tours and Linea are recommended for long-haul journeys.
