The unit of currency is the guaraní (plural guaranís ), indicated by 'G'.
Paraguay is cheaper than Argentina or Uruguay but more expensive than Bolivia. Budget travelers can get by on US$20.00 a day; those looking for a bit more comfort and nutrition should expect to spend US$30.00 - US$50.00 a day.
ATMs in Asunción, Encarnación and Ciudad del Este are connected to Visa, MasterCard and Cirrus networks - some even dispense US dollars. You may stumble upon an ATM in other towns, but they are rarely linked internationally - get cash from those in the three major cities mentioned.
Plastic is rarely accepted outside Asunción and, even there, only in mid-range to top-end hotels, restaurants and shops.
Banknotes are available in denominations of 1000, 5000, 10,000, 50,000 and 100,000 guaranís .
There are rare 50, 100 and 500 guaraní coins.
Casas de cambio (exchange bureaus) are abundant in Asunción and border towns, and change cash and sometimes travelers checks (3-5% commission); try banks in the interior. Some banks will not cash travelers checks without the original proof of purchase receipt. Street changers give slightly lower rates for cash only and can be helpful on weekends or evenings.
The perennial change challenge occurs in Paraguay. Keep plenty of change and small notes on you as you go along - it comes in handy.
