Getting There

Getting to León from Managua is an easy 90-minute minivan trip from the Universidad Centro America (UCA) bus lot. There are several international bus agencies in León, including Ticabus and King Quality. There are three main bus lots, but most leave from the chaotic main station (tel: 311 3909, 6a Calle NE), about 1km (0.6mi) northeast of the center. Besides Managua, services include Chinandenga (90min), Corinto (90min), Estelí (2.5hr), Matagalpa (3hr) and San Isidro (2.5hr).

The much smaller bus lot at Mercado San Juan hosts ordinario buses to destinations such as Playa Astillero (2.5hr) and Rota (Cerro Negro; 2.25hr).

You can also catch buses to beaches at Poneloya and Las Peñitas (both 20min) from Mercadito Subtiava.

Because of pro-tourism tax breaks, hiring a car in Nicaragua is quite affordable (although fuel prices sure ain't!), a convenient option if you're traveling around the country.

Getting Around

The city is strollable, but big enough that you may want to take taxis, particularly at night.

Bicycles are also a popular form of transport, but bike hire isn't always readily available. Check with your hotel for recommendations.
