Mozambique has the well-deserved reputation of being expensive in comparison with its neighbours. Staying in basic lodging, eating local food and travelling with public transport, plan on spending from at least US$25.00 per day. Mid-range travel with some comforts will cost from US$50.00 to US$150.00 per day, excluding airfares, while top-end luxuries will cost from US$150.00 to US$500.00 per day at some of the exclusive island getaways.
The most readily accepted currencies are US dollars and South African rands. Especially in the south, you can pay for many things (such as accommodation) with rands. There are ATMs in all major cities, and you can change cash in banks or private forex bureaux. Changing money on the street is not safe anywhere. Travellers cheques can be changed at a few banks in major cities, with high commissions, and with original purchase receipts required. In general, tipping isn't expected, except at places catering to tourists, where about 10% is appropriate. Bargaining, especially at streetside craft markets, is de rigeur.
