Money

The Maltese lira (Lm), plural liri, is divided into 100 cents (c). In English, the currency is often referred to as the pound. Malta plans to adopt the euro as of 1 January 2008.

Banks usually offer better exchange rates than hotels. There is a 24-hour exchange bureau and ATMs at the airport and at Pinto Wharf. ATMs can be found in most towns.

It’s a good idea to round up a taxi fare or restaurant bill to leave a small tip. Shops have fixed prices; hotels and car-hire agencies offer reduced rates in the low and shoulder seasons (October to May).
