The rainy season cuts loose from June to September. It's characterised by torrential downpours and thunderstorms, which are normally preceded by very strong winds. July and August are the wettest months - but rain only falls for a few hours per day, bringing temperatures down and clearing the skies of dust. Avoiding the rainy season is more about impassable roads than messing up your hair style.
Mali's hottest season occurs shortly before the rains - between March and June temperatures frequently exceed 40°C (104°F).
The best time to visit is the drier and generally cooler period from November to February. The dry season is characterised by a couple of prevailing winds: the alize blows cooler air from the northeast between November and January before the dusty harmattan winds of the Sahel take over.
