Lovers of a desert climate will find Mopti suits them down to the ground. There are two seasons, broadly speaking: the hot and the sweltering. Early winter is the best time of year to visit. It's when temperatures are at their mildest - nights are almost cool - and the air is cleanest and driest. Later in winter, northerly winds cast a Saharan haze over the skies. The buildup to summer is unpleasant, but temperatures ease mildly when the rains arrive. Global warming seems to be affecting Sahelian weather patterns quite radically, however, and in recent decades summer rains have often been lower than average.
