Bamako: Overview

Far from down-at-heel, Bamako shimmies with energy.

You'd expect the capital city of one of the poorest countries in the world to be sullen and down-at-heel, but Bamako is a brash cacophony of music, motorbikes, and people buying, selling and trading under the hot midday sun. Despite its problems it's got chutzpah.

Travel Warning: Demonstrations

Bamako has experienced a number of demonstrations recently in response to the increasingly high cost of living. More are expected in coming weeks. Though the protests have been peaceful so far, they could potentially turn violent, and travellers are advised to exercise caution.

severity: Mid-level alert
