The Baltic climate is generally temperate, but on the cool and damp side. July and August, the warmest months, are also wet, with days of persistent showers. At these northern latitudes, summer days are long, with up to 19 hours of daylight at midsummer.
Just 53km (33mi) from Rīga, Sigulda is Latvia's winter capital, with surrounding hills and an Olympic bobsled run. The town's altitude (100m) means it's a bit cooler than Rīga year round.
