Verona: Overview

Let one of Italy's most beautiful, romantic cities woo you in style.

Stroll arm-in-arm with your loved one along the streets of Verona and you could be forgiven for believing the tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet to be true. Well it's not, but not to worry - Verona is one of Italy's loveliest cities and hardly in need of Shakespearean hyperbole.

Verona is known as piccola Roma (little Rome) for its importance in the days of the Roman Empire. The town's golden era came during the 13th and 14th centuries under the colourful, roller-coaster reign of the Della Scala family (aka the Scaligeri). This period was indeed noted for the savage family feuding to which Shakespeare alluded in his play.

These days the city draws romantic souls and opera-lovers to its big-ticket sights, but simply wandering the stylish, marble-lined streets will offer visitors immense pleasure and plenty of sightseeing eye-candy. Parting will indeed be such sweet sorrow.
