A gracious city of wide boulevards, elegant arcades and grand public buildings.

Turin rests in regal charm beside the pretty River Po. Touting itself as Europe's capital of baroque, the city has the air of a capital manqué rather than a provincial outpost. Though much of the suburban sprawl is less than picturesque, there's an enormous green belt with views of the Alps east of the river.

The Savoy capital from the mid-16th-century, Turin was briefly the seat of Italy's parliament after unification. It was also the birthplace of Italian industry - giants like FIAT lured hundreds of thousands of poor southerners to the city, housing them in company-built suburbs like Mirafiori.
