In tourist restaurants or hotels, where a service charge is usually tacked on in any case, tipping is optional. In smaller places, where there is no service charge added to the bill, a tip is appreciated (anything upwards of 10%, depending on how impressed you are).
Tipping is not necessary for taxis or autorickshaws, but if you're going to be using a service repeatedly, an initial tip usually ensures standards are kept up. Keep things in perspective though; demands for baksheesh can quickly become never-ending. Ask yourself if it's really necessary or desirable to do so before shelling out.
