Tegucigalpa – or Tegus, as most people call it – is a bustling city in a bowl-shaped valley with a colonial center and sprawling residential neighborhoods. With a historical downtown area, a few good museums, and a variety of restaurants, it’s worth a day or two. It’s no Shangri-la, of course, with traffic, smog and crime, not to mention crazy taxi drivers. The press covers gang violence with obsessive detail – mention to anyone you’re going to la capital and you’re sure to be warned against it, with stories of robbery to assault and worse. But as with any city, if you keep your wits about you, Tegus can be a rewarding and invigorating place.
