Like most tropical countries, Honduras experiences a rainy season and a dry season, known locally as invierno (winter) and verano (summer), respectively - these may have a strong bearing on your travel plans.

The rainy season on the Bay Islands lasts from around September to December, with nortes ('northerners', cool storms from the north) possible into February. Hurricanes rarely hit Honduras directly, however even a far-off hurricane can send heavy rain Honduras' way and can cause flooding or minor mudslides. Travel is far easier during the dry season, especially for scuba diving, which is one of Roatán's main attractions.

February and March are good months to visit because the weather is fairly stable across the country; the trails and roads are drying out but the trees and underbrush are still full and green.

Sports fans may like to time their trip around the Bay Islands International Triathlon, an Olympic- and sprint-distance event that takes place every March.

Weather

Temperatures range from 28°C (82°F) to 32°C (90°F) throughout most of the year; it's about 3°C (37°F) cooler in the rainy season, which runs from September to January and can cause flooding. Hurricane season is from August to November, though direct hits are uncommon. Mid-February and March are good times to visit as the weather is fairly stable and scuba diving is at its best. Inland, the trails are drying out but the trees and underbrush are still full and green.
