A Top Day in Roatán

Days take a while to kick-start on Roatán. After easing myself out of bed and checking the horizon, I shuffle off to Rudy's place to fuel myself with some of its famous banana pancakes and an all-too-rare mug of real coffee. The caffeine snaps me out of my lethargy and I am ready for this morning's scuba dive challenge. We head out to the Texas dive site right on the most westerly point of the island. I strike it lucky today. Apart from a whole bunch of groupers, a green moray eel poked its head out - and I'm pretty sure I got a glimpse of a triggerfish. Back on shore, it's set to be another glorious afternoon in the tropics, so I protect myself from the sun before jumping on a water taxi to the ivory sands of West Bay. There I do as little as I possibly can for as long as I can. The occasional swim and snorkel out to the reef is about as energetic as it should get on a day like this. As the afternoon draws to a close, I decide to walk in the cooler evening air along the beach back to West End. The sky is already turning different shades of pink by the time we call into a beachside bar to watch the sun go down. From there it's off to International Rotisserie Chicken for the best budget food in town, before joining a group of fellow underwater enthusiasts at the Purple Turtle, a bar popular with the dive crowd. There I set out to bore as many people as I can with my tales of moray eels and triggerfish.
