A Top Day in Flores & Tikal

Assuming that I'm staying in Flores, I'll want to be up early to get out to Tikal before the tour groups arrive. For a down-home breakfast, Restaurante Peche's is the go, but if I'm looking for something a bit more upscale, La Hacienda del Rey keeps the same hours and serves a better class of fare. Out at Tikal, you can hook up with a tour group in just about any language you can name, but I tend to grab a map from the information center and go it alone. There's a couple of good museums out here, my favourite being the Museo Cerámico, which is chock-full of items found during the various digs. For lunch there's a couple of no-frills restaurants at the park entrance, but if I feel like living it up a bit, the three hotels on the park grounds all serve up better, slightly pricier dishes. If I'm not hanging around to watch the sun set over the temple tops, I hightail it back to Flores for happy-hour drinks on the back deck of the Hotel Santana - a fine way to end the day. Dinner at La Luna is pretty much mandatory at least once when I'm in Flores; it offers delicious, well-prepared food in comfortable surrounds. If I've still got legs after all this, Flores' little bar zone down on the Playa Sur is the place to be - El Trópico for drinks and to meet up with other travelers, and then on to Adictos next door to dance the night away.
