The north-south position of the Rhine valley creates microclimatic conditions that are temperate enough to allow viticulture to thrive. Summers are mild; humidity levels in these months can be quite high, making afternoon thunderstorms quite common. Indian summers can sometimes keep beer gardens open until October. Spring is a beautiful season but it can be slow to arrive. An Winters are mostly temperate but, in a harsh winter, temperatures can plunge well below freezing and stay there for several weeks. Brrr!
