One of the oldest cities in France, Clermont-Ferrand is famous as the birthplace of Bibendum, the roly-poly Michelin man. The first Michelin guidebook, published in 1900 to promote motor-car tourism - and the company's tyres - emerged from here. It's a sparkling place with a big student population.
