On both East and West Falkland, the annual sports meetings, featuring sheep dog trials and horse racing, have been a tradition since the 19th-century advent of sheep farming. These festivities take place in Stanley on December 26 and 27 and on West Falkland in late February or early March. Other than that, look for events on and around the Queen's Birthday (April 21), Liberation Day (June 14), Falklands Day (August 14), the Battle of the Falklands remembrance day (December 8) and for major western holidays like Christmas, New Year's and Easter. A holiday unique to the Falklands is Margaret Thatcher Day, although the official government website notes that this is 'not a public or government holiday'.
