Only got three days and want to soak up some London vibe in a hurry? Visit the British Museum, undergo some retail therapy, go to a football match and sleep. Next morning, head 'sarf' of the river, and start by booking yourself a ticket for the London Eye. Round off with dinner at Petrus or Les Trois Garçons. On day 3, visit the Globe Theatre and picture the throngs listening to Shakespeare's words for the first time. Get a big dollop of old London atmosphere at Borough market before heading to the hulking Tower of London for a history lesson. A riverside pub would a be nice finish.
Providing I'm not suffering too much from Friday night my favourite day in London has to be Saturday and it always starts with a strong coffee at Monmouth Café at Borough Market, south of the river. Once the caffeine has kicked in and the papers have been read it's time for a stroll around one of my favourite London markets (open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays), ideal for those with a passion for food. Speciality Delis, organic butchers and row upon row of mouth-watering food stalls make it a colourful place to wander. With breakfast (or rather, brunch) over it's time for a bit of culture. London has a wealth of museums and galleries to choose from but the one I like best for just ambling around is the Tate Modern. Easily one of Britain's most popular Millennium projects, the Tate Modern has been transformed from an empty power station into a powerhouse of modern art and there's always something weird and wonderful on display to capture my imagination. If I'm feeling particularly cultured I might hop on the Tate (Modern) to Tate (Britain) boat service that links new with old and stops at the London Eye along the way. It's more likely, however, that I'll choose to stretch my legs and stroll along the South Bank, which in summer months is one of the best ways to get a feel for all that London has to offer. In addition to the galleries, theatres and museums lined up along the river there are outdoor cafés, festivals and musicians to enjoy. Late afternoon and it must be time for a drink of some kind. If I'm feeling flush I'll head to Windows on the World on the top floor of the Hilton. You might not be able to see France from here, but the view of London's skyline is unparalleled and there's something wonderfully decadent about sipping on a cocktail as the sun goes down on one of the world's most vibrant capital cities.
