Each city, town and village has a festival for its patron saint during the year called a fiesta patronal . The festival of El Salvador del Mundo, aka Jesus Christ, the patron saint of El Salvador, is held in the first week of August. The celebration is largest in San Salvador, beginning several days in advance and culminating with a fair and huge parade. Other national celebrations include Semana Santa (Holy Week) and Virgen de Guadalupe in December. Most businesses, government offices, and schools are closed on public holidays.
