Quito is jam-packed with holidays, both of the religious kind and in honor of independence. Major holidays can be celebrated for several days around the actual date - banks, offices and some services close. Transport can also get crowded so buy tickets in advance. Semana Santa is especially colorful in Quito. If you're here during Easter, look out for cucuruchos (penitents wearing purple robes and inverted cone masks) on Good Friday.

Like everywhere in Ecuador, Quito enjoys a good knees-up. One of the best festivals is during the first week of December: locals celebrate the Founding of Quito with bullfights at the Plaza, parades and street dances. Carnaval is another great time to be here. Watch your camera as there are water fights aplenty!
