Quito doesn't allow for boredom. Once you've taken in its colonial majesty, jump on a bike for the bi-monthly street ride, hike up a volcano, sweat it out on a tennis court, splash about on a paddleboat in Parque La Carolina, go horse-riding, spend a day on the green or salsa the night away!
If volcano flanks look a bit scary, would-be climbers should head to Rocódromo for a climbing fix without the threat of eruption. This climbing facility is just across from Estadio Rumiñahui and has more than a dozen routes on three main walls, a four-faced bouldering structure, and a rock building.
Two Sundays a month, the entire length of Avenida Amazonas and most of the Old Town are closed to cars, and loads of cyclists take to the streets for ciclopaseo . The entire ride stretches from the airport, through the Old Town and into the southern reaches of Quito. Local mountain-biking companies rent bikes.
If you don't want to spend your nights shoe-gazing at Quito's salsotecas (salsa clubs), learn to dance! There are loads of schools around the city - most offer merengue (a ballroom dance originating in Haiti), cumbia (a dance originally from Colombia, like salsa) as well as other Latin American dances.
Fancy a round of 18? Quito Tenis y Golf Club has a sensational golf course with something for everyone. If you still have energy after a day on the greens, indulge in some tennis, squash, horse-riding or swimming. Hey, why not bring the kids in for some ballet or karate!
