Introducing Des Moines
Des Moines, meaning ‘of the monks’ not ‘in the corn’ as the surrounding fields might suggest, is Iowa’s often-mocked capital. The town really is rather dull, but has a few good attractions. You must see the capitol, if nothing else. A fact not mentioned in the tourist brochures: before Ozzy Osbourne married Sharon and she started cooking for him, he bit the head off a bat here in 1982.
