Burundi: Overview

A tentative peace accord struggles for survival in this mountainous speck of Africa.

Although the situation has cooled in recent years, Burundi is a powder keg that could potentially explode at any moment. Travellers are strongly advised to stay away until Burundi gets back on its feet.

Travel Warning: Volatile Country

Despite positive changes and a genuine feeling in Burundi that peace is finally possible after 12 years of civil war, sporadic clashes between government and rebel forces continue. Fighting is not uncommon in the countryside and on the streets of the capital, Bujumbura, where curfews are enforced.

severity: High-level alert
