There's something quite beguiling about Århus, Denmark's second-largest city, that has for too long stood bashfully in the shadow of her more glamorous, attention-seeking big sister, Copenhagen. I love a 'big city' that feels like a relaxed and friendly big town, and Århus certainly fits that description. My perfect day would start with searching out a strong coffee and brunch plate (my newest discovery!) at a favourite cafe - probably Casablanca, with all its effortless continental charm. From there I'd poke around the Latin Quarter for a spell, then wind my way up Åboulevarden, checking out the buzzing cafes and indulging in a little people-watching, and marvelling over the fact that until recently, the Å, the 'river' that flows here (hey, let's call it what it is: a stream), was buried under a busy main road. Where did locals go before Åboulevarden came about?? Anyhoo, my destination is ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum, the city's fabulous new art museum, where it's all sweeping curves, soaring spaces and white walls, over nine floors. I'll check out any new exhibits, old favourites, the view from the rooftop and the covetables in the gift shop.
From there I'll meander east to LYNFabrikken for a late lunch, stroll down Møllestien - simply to put a smile on my face at the postcard-quaintness of it all - then grab a free city bike and head north to Risskov, or south to Marselisborg, as the mood takes me. Idle exploration over, it's off to my new favourite neighbourhood, Frederiksbjerg, for Danish-meets-French fare at the hyggelig ('cosy' - a huge Danish compliment) Klassisk Vinbar & Bistro. After dinner it's time to explore some of the neighbourhood bars, or see what live music is on offer at Train or Musikhuset Århus. A nightcap with friends - perhaps somewhere like Ris Ras Filliongongong - would round out the day perfectly.
