While Bogotá is chilly and Medellín is the 'City of Eternal Spring', Cali and the Valle del Cauca are sultry year-round, which perhaps explains the locals' passion for all-night salsa dancing.

The altitude (1005m/3297ft) means it's not as brutally oppressive as the coast and, in the evenings, remarkably reliable breezes dissipate the heat of the day and usher in soft, tropical nights. Rain falls throughout the year but is heaviest from March to May and September to November.
