How much it costs to travel in Tibet depends on how much you want to see and how quickly you want to see it. There is little in the way of public transport in Tibet and hitching can be time-consuming, so if you really want to see a lot in a short period of time, you should probably think about hiring a vehicle and driver, at rates of about US$0.50 per kilometre. Most hired transport tends to work out at around US$20.00 - US$40.00 per person per day (assuming three or four people are sharing the vehicle).

If you don't hire transport (and it's still possible to get around to some spots without it), costs are reasonable. If you're based in Lhasa and visiting surrounding sites, you could get by on US$15.00 a day - US$3.00 for dorm, US$5.00 for food and the rest for transportation and admission fees. Costs can drop drastically outside the main cities of Lhasa, Shigatse and Tsetang, especially if you live on instant noodles.
