The wondrous heart and soul of Tibet.
Lhasa is a city of wonders. The Potala, a vast white and ochre fortress, dominates Lhasa's skyline. Once the seat of Tibetan government and the location of the tombs of previous Dalai Lamas, the Potala serves as a symbolic focus for Tibetan aspirations of self-government.
Travel restrictions in Tibet have been lifted by the Chinese government and tourists are once again allowed to enter. The three-month closure followed a series of public gatherings and pro-Tibet demonstrations which descended into violence in March. Fatalities were reported, although the exact number was never verified. There is an increased military presence in Lhasa and travellers should take care to avoid large demonstrations.
