One of Valparaíso's biggest annual events is Año Nuevo (New Year's), thanks to the fantastic fireworks display that attracts hundreds of thousands of spectators to the city. April 17 marks the arrival of the authorization of the cabildo (town council) of Valparaíso in 1791, and is now celebrated as the city's official day.
