Getting There

La Serena's Aeropuerto La Florida is 5km (3mi) east of downtown on Ruta 41. Lan Chile flies daily to Santiago (50min), Copiapó (45min) and Antofagasta.

La Serena's Terminal de Buses has dozens of carriers plying the Panamericana from Santiago north to Arica. Destinations include Antofagasta (13hr), Arica (23hr), Calama (16hr), Copiapó (5hr), Iquique (19hr), Los Vilos (4hr), Santiago (7hr) and Vallenar (3hr). Via Elqui has frequent departures to Pisco Elqui (2hr) and Monte Grande (2hr). Buses Serenamar runs several daily buses to Guanaqueros (50min), Tongoy and Andacollo. For Argentine destinations, Covalle Bus goes to Mendoza (12hr) and San Juan (14hr).

Many regional destinations are more frequently and rapidly served by colectivo (shared) taxis. To Coquimbo (15min), they leave from Av Francisco de Aguirre between Balmaceda and Los Carrera. You can hire a colectivo taxi for a day tour to Valle de Elqui.

Getting Around

She Transfer provides door-to-door minibus transfers to Aeropuerto La Florida, 5km (3mi) east of downtown on Ruta 41. Otherwise, take a private taxi. For car hire, try Avis, Hertz or Econorent.

The main bus terminal is about 500m (0.3mi) south of Plaza de Armas, and the beaches are another 500m west of here.

The town center is easy to get around on foot.
