A Top Day in Québec City

My favourite way to start off a day in Québec City is with breakfast and a latte at Café Krieghoff, a place that serves up some of the best java brews in the town. From here, it is just a short amble to the Musée National des Beaux-Arts du Québec to take in exhibits that range from artistic life in New France to the hottest, most daring contemporary artists working in the province today. After a morning inside, I'll nip on down to rue St-Jean, a strip filled with cool little independent shops hawking everything from black-and-white striped pasta to home-made soaps. Reaching Porte St-Jean, I'll head into the Old Town. Though packed with museums and sights, the thing I still enjoy most is just roaming aimlessly, soaking up the period atmosphere and exploring the side streets. I'll finish my Old Town jaunt off with a Beaver Tail, a huge flat doughnut heaped with gooey toppings, from the stand next to the Chateau Frontenac. After that, it's time to go outside the Old Town's walls for some nightlife, which despite the town's sleepy reputation, is one of Québec City's little treasures. Les Voûtes de Napoléon can't be beat for a raucous night of Quebec chanson while La Gallerie Rouje in the St-Roch neighbourhood is awesome for its eclectic concerts and, even more so, for the eclectic crowd of locals it draws.
