A Top Day in Manaus

A great day in Manaus begins at the Mercado Municipal. I'll go early to see the fish being unloaded and the market being set up, then pick a stall for a cupuaçu (local fruit) juice and the super local tucumã sandwich (heated milk bread, fresh white cheese and slices of a local palm fruit).

If the bracelet vendor won't come down on her price, then I'll save my cash and head out to the Museu de Ciências Naturais. I always enjoy the walk from the bus stop to the museum.

After being wowed by the blue butterflies, horned beetles and iridescent bugs it's off to the tranquil Bosque da Ciêcia. Hopefully they've just cleaned the manatee tanks (so you can actually see them) and there isn't a crowd around the river otters. Otherwise, I'll wander under the trees down to the turtle pond and wait for a family of monkeys to swing past.

After a vegetarian buffet lunch in the centre, I'll read and then sleep through the afternoon heat, or maybe catch a movie at the mall. Once twilight sets in, the Praça São Sebastião with a cold beer in my hand is where I want to be.

After an hour or two spent with friends over a pizza, we'll head out toward Ponta Negra and catch some live music in a club.
