After awaking in Alice Springs I normally make a beeline for the Red Ochre Grill to fuel up on a big eggy breakfast and coffee. Next I do a loop around the town centre to see what's changed (usually not much), first ambling up Todd Mall with a stop at the Red Sand Art Gallery to check out the latest indigenous art, then wandering back down Hartley St and popping into the National Pioneer Women's Hall of Fame. At some point I always end up standing in the middle of Todd River, marvelling at its sun-bleached bed and wondering how it looks in the rare times it floods. Now I head out to the brilliant Alice Springs Desert Park where I spend a few hours meeting the inhabitants of desert rivers, dunes and woodlands. Driving back into town, I'll drop by the Albert Namatjira Gallery in the Araluen Centre before continuing to Olive Pink Botanic Garden for a peaceful, cheap feed in the on-site cafe and a stroll around the shrubbery. For the next hour or so I may visit the Reptile Centre or the interesting Royal Flying Doctor Service Base, or I may return to my hotel/hostel/cabin/tent and just have a kip. Early evening always means dinner at the fabulous Bluegrass Restaurant (at an outside table, if you please), then a few or more beers at the exuberant locals' hangout Bojangles.
