Like much of the Caribbean, Antigua can be a pricey place to travel. Travelling in comfort on Antigua can easily mean spending several hundred US dollars a day. A minimal budget might be around US$80.00 - US$100.00 a day, but this won't leave much for shopping, transport and activities. A moderate budget will start at around US$150.00 , most of that going to the price of accommodation. Barbuda has some inexpensive guesthouses, but most people who stay on the island rent villas or book spa time and sip champagne at one of the three very remote, exclusive resorts.

The official currency is the EC dollar, but US dollars are commonly used. However, unless rates are posted in US dollars (as is the norm with accommodations), it usually works out better to pay in EC dollars. MasterCard, Visa and American Express are widely accepted, and ATMs are easy to find. Credit card charges are made in US dollars, so businesses that quote prices in EC dollars must convert the bill to a US dollar total. Whenever you intend to pay by credit card, it's a good idea to ask the exchange rate first to avoid overcharging.

A 10% service charge is added to most restaurant bills, in which case no further tipping is necessary. Hotels charge a 10% service charge, plus an 8.5% government tax.
