Tour description provided by World Expeditions

This extension tour to Angkor Wat will acquaint you with the history and religions of this fascinating modern day region, along with the architecture and lifestyles of the past. The undoubted highlight is the temple complex of Angkor itself. For more than five hundred years the capital cities of the vast Khmer Empire had been built here. Little is known about the slow decline of this Empire. For a period of about four hundred years, the jungle took over, until the French rediscovered the area in 1860. It is the site of the greatest concentration of temples in the former Khmer Empire, and it is one of the richest archaeological sites in the world. An astonishing 232 square km (60 square miles) is scattered with temples, pagodas, walls, moats, causeways, royal roads and reservoirs, built between the 9th and 13th centuries. Angkor Wat, with its five majestic towers, is not only the largest of all the Khmer monuments, but the largest temple in the world. The volume of stone equals that of the Egyptian pyramid of Cheops, yet almost all of it is carved in exquisite detail. There is no other historical site in South East Asia that matches the grandeur of this ancient complex. This extension would compliment to any of our Nepal, India or Asian adventures.

Sua s’dei, welcome to the Kingdom of Wonder! Arrival time, should not be later than 14.00pm. You will be greeted by our hospitable guide and transferred to our hotel in town. In the afternoon we explore Angkor Wat, easily the most famous and best-preserved of all temples within the Angkor complex. It is a massive three-tiered pyramid crowned by five lotus-like towers rising 65 meters from ground level. It is the only one to have remained a significant religious centre-first Hindu, then Buddhist-since its foundation. Overnight in Siem Reap
Day 2 At Angkor Complex
After breakfast at the hotel we'll drive the 7km road that leads to the temple sites. Start your visit to the ancient city of Angkor Thom, surrounded by an 8m high wall, it was the last capital of the Great Khmer Empire under the reign of Jayavarman VII. Continue to Bayon Temple in the exact center of the city. This 12th century masterpiece is a study in grandeur. The exterior gallery walls have extensive, superb bas-reliefs, particularly the East and South Galleries. Ta Prohm temple, built in the mid 12th to early 13th centuries is your next visit. From here, travel to the "gem" of the Angkor area, the pretty temple of Banteay Srey. The so-called "Citadel of the Women" displays some of the finest examples of classical Khmer art. Close your day perfectly, with a rural sunset over the paddy fields and the beautiful countryside from the pyramidal Pre Rup temple. Overnight in Siem Reap .
Day 3 Trip Concludes in Siem Reap
After breakfast, transfer to Kompong Kleang floating village, a settlement of over 20,000 people.
