Begin with a leisurely paced walking tour to see top Athens attractions, like Syntagma Square and the historic neighborhood of Plaka, on your way to the Acropolis. Tour this incredible UNESCO World Heritage Site and its ruins with your guide, and then travel to picturesque Cape Sounion in the afternoon to see the Temple of Poseidon.
Acropolis Walking Tour (3 hours):
Meet your local guide in central Athens and head to Syntagma metro station to see its numerous archaeological exhibits comprising ancient grave stones, pottery and mosaics from the 5th century AD. Continue to the Old Parliament House (Vouli) on Athens’ busy Stadiou Street and hear how this impressive building once housed the country's Parliament, before it later turned into the Greek National History Museum.
Stroll through Syntagma Square, the heart of the city, to see two of Athens’ stunning Byzantine churches: Sotira of Lycodimos and Kottakis Church. Head inside one of them and marvel at its majestic interior with your guide.
Walk through Athens’ old historical neighborhood – Plaka – and pass a beautiful old Christian church called Lysicrates Monument. From here, it’s a short walk up the Dionyssiou Areopagitou walkway to Athens’ Acropolis, passing Mars Hill and Dionysus Sanctuary – a site dedicated to the Greek god Dionysus.
While walking around the ruins of this magnificent UNESCO World Heritage Site with your guide, learn all about the history of its monuments. See the Temple of Athena Nike, Propylaea (known as the monumental gateway to the Acropolis) and, of course, the Parthenon – the Acropolis’ crowning glory. Your tour will finish on the Acropolis hill; you will then have just over two hours at leisure before your afternoon tour starts.
Cape Sounion and Temple of Poseidon Half-Day Trip (4 hours):
Around 2:45pm, board your coach for the drive to Cape Sounion, the southernmost tip of the Attica Peninsula, passing the idyllic beaches of the Saronic Gulf along the way. When you arrive, walk over to see the astounding Temple of Poseidon, a gleaming white beacon perched on a rocky hilltop overlooking the sea. The site was an important temple for the ancient Greeks, who once flocked here to worship Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea.
Admire incredible views across the Aegean Sea and look out for the island of Kea that you can often see on a clear day. Hear facts from your guide, such as how the temple was built in 44 BC, and see many of its original Doric columns still standing, including one that features graffiti left by English Romantic poet Lord Byron in the early 1800s.
After your tour, you’ll be driven back to your Athens hotel.
