    To stock up on groceries, head for the Somerfield supermarket A general produce market is held every Thursday in the Market Hall , and there's a Farmers Market in the Somerfield car park every second Saturday in summer (in the Market Hall in winter).

    The most famous, and still the best; has a sizeable Anglo-Welsh literature section, and a Wales travel section. Booth also runs bookshops in the castle, covering subjects from hobbies to erotica. In the castle grounds is an honesty bookshop (50p per book).

    Immense is the best way to describe this shiny new shopping centre. All of the high-street chains you could name have a home here, along with a smorgasbord of eateries, a cinema multiplex and a large branch of the John Lewis department store, which dominates its south end.

    Spillers Records

    The world's oldest record shop, founded in 1894 (when it sold wax phonograph cylinders), Spillers stocks a large range of CDs and vinyl, prides itself on catering to the nonmainstream end of the market (it's especially good on punk), and promotes local talent through in-store gigs.

    Market Hall

    The 19th-century Market Hall is a lively place, hosting a general market (food, drink, clothes, household goods) on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday, a flea market (bric-a-brac, collectables, second-hand goods) on Wednesday, regular weekend crafts and antiques fairs, and a farmers market on the fourth Thursday of each month.

    Cardigan Market

    The neo-Gothic Guildhall dates from 1860, and is now home to Cardigan Market. The field cannon outside commemorates the Charge of the Light Brigade in 1854, which was led by Lord Cardigan (after whom the button-up woollen sweater was named).

    High St Arcade

    Divergent points of the music spectrum come together in this arcade: traditional music specialist Telynau Vining Harps (sheet music and instruments) and dance-music gurus Catapult 100% Vinyl (DJ equipment and records). Pussy Galore stocks funky women's fashion and sparkly accessories, while Hobo's is great for secondhand 1960s and '70s clothing.

    The Spectrum Gallery is a particularly interesting little place with a range of arty crafts and design-led gifts. Keep a lookout for the all-seeing eye that keeps guard over the high street from the shop's façade.
