Things to do in Beaumaris (Biwmares)

  1. Sarah's Delicatessen & The Coffee Shop

This excellent deli champions local produce, such as cheese and ales, with a well-stocked selection of treats. The owners also run a small cafe round the corner with daily specials (try the Anglesey dressed crab), good coffee and heavenly desserts.

  3. Puffin Island Cruises

Puffin Island is a hotbed of bird and marine life, designated a Special Protection Area. The (weather-dependent) boat trips take in spectacular views across the Menai Strait to the Snowdonia range and promise encounters with 12 species of sea birds in their natural habitat. Book at the kiosks at the entrance to the pier, or by phone.

  4. Loft at the Ye Olde Bulls Head Inn

Compared to the hotel's more pedestrian Brasserie restaurant, the Loft is more of a fine-dining experience. Peruse the menu over aperitifs in the lounge before climbing the stairs for elegant decor, a refined ambience and lovingly crafted food, centring on seasonal Anglesey produce.

  6. Beaumaris Courthouse & Gaol

Atmospheric and eerie, the courthouse is nearly 400 years old and the Victorian jail contains the last-surviving treadwheel in Britain (for hard-labour prisoners). The jail and courthouse are separate buildings, but the combined ticket gets you admission to both.

  7. Beaumaris Castle

The last of Edward I's great castles of North Wales, and the largest, Beaumaris is deservedly a World Heritage Site. The four successive lines of fortifications and concentric 'walls within walls' make it the most technically perfect castle in Great Britain – the castle with the wow factor.
