Earthwatch Institute

www.earthwatch.org

This global conservation charity places volunteers on scientific research expeditions in over 50 countries, with the aim of promoting the understanding and action necessary for a sustainable environment.

Timing & Length of Placements

Expedition lengths vary from two days to three weeks, with departure dates throughout the year. You can opt to go on two consecutive expeditions, at different locations within the same country.

Destinations

Global.

Costs

Fees vary hugely, from £150 for a two-day, behind-the-scenes project to £1800 for longer projects. This includes briefing, training, equipment, accommodation, food and in-country transport. There is also a small charge donated directly to Climate Care (a carbon-offset company).

Eligibility

Depending on the project, volunteers need to be at least 16 or 18. There are also some family teams which can include children 10 years and older. There are no required skills or experience. Earthwatch tries to accommodate all disabilities.
